30 Inch Flight Cage for Parakeets, Cockatiels and Finches

Budgies and cockatiels need width more than height, because they fly across a cage rather than up it. Thirty inches gives a small flock room to make real flights between perches instead of hopping. The divider lifts out, so the same cage is either one wide aviary or two separate homes, which is what you want during a quarantine, a bonding period, or when a pair will not settle. Two security doors open for cleaning and four feeding doors let you change water without opening the whole front. The slide out tray and mesh grate mean the daily clean is a tray change, not a rebuild. Cages stack if you run two.

Price range: $69.99 through $79.99

A parakeet does not fly upward. It flies in level darts from one perch to another, which is why the number that matters on a bird cage is the longest straight run inside it rather than how tall the stand underneath is. At 29.9 inches wide this gives a small bird a real flight line instead of a perch to shuffle along.

Bar spacing and who it suits

0.4 inch spacing is the figure to check before anything else. Too wide and a small head goes through, which is the way most cage accidents happen. This spacing suits parakeets, budgies, finches, canaries, lovebirds and cockatiels. It is not intended for larger parrots, whose beaks and spacing requirements are a different problem entirely.

The divider is the part people end up using more than they expect. Out, it is one wide flight space for a bonded pair or a small flock. In, it is two separate rooms, which matters when you introduce a new bird, when one needs quiet after a vet visit, or when a pair stops getting on for a fortnight.

Cleaning and maintenance

The tray slides out from the bottom without opening the cage, which is the difference between cleaning daily and meaning to. The mesh grating above it keeps birds off the droppings while still letting everything fall through. Four feeding doors mean food and water can be changed from outside, so a nervous bird is disturbed less often.

Powder coated steel wipes down and does not rust the way bare wire does when it meets water and fruit. Perches are included but worth varying over time, since perches of different thicknesses stop one part of the foot taking all the load.

Questions

Can two cages really stack? Yes, they are designed to, which is the usual way to keep two species or two pairs in a room without losing more floor.

Is it big enough as a permanent home? For a pair of budgies or finches with time out of the cage, yes. Any bird kept in permanently needs the width used, so set the perches at opposite ends rather than clustering them.

What goes in the tray? Paper or a cage liner. Avoid anything scented, since birds have sensitive airways.
